Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse to ensure she could continue her passion for literature and theatre throughout the day. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an effective tool for social change. Her mother, too, was well-educated and encouraged her to say something by using the arts. Even though DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained certificates in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home that one of the members of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her duties left her unhappy by journalism and she chose to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay was brought in right after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective.
